Kalanga Gad Hydro Electric Project, a monumental endeavor nestled amidst the tranquil landscapes of Sunkuda and Khiratadi VDCs in Nepal’s Bajhang district.

Project location and geography

Geologically, the Kalanga Gad Hydro Electric Project is nestled within the geological wonders of the Lesser Himalaya’s Lakharpata Formation, between Pauta and GhateuliKhola. Here, dolomite dominates, complemented by sightings of slate and phyllite in the headworks and adit areas. As the headrace tunnel weaves its way through dolomite, dolomitic limestone, slate, and phyllite, it navigates the project’s diverse geological makeup. The project area, marked by its ruggedness, tells the story of active erosion and the river’s constant rejuvenation. Flowing southwest, the Kalanga Gad winds through the project area, with geographical coordinates spanning from 290 30’ 015” N to 290 35’ 00” N and 800 50’ 45” E to 800 54’ 45” E. Bordering villages, including Surma, Lekh&BhamChaur to the east, Kpalseri and Darchula District to the west, Kanda &Darchula District to the north, and Khiratadi to the south, frame KGHEP’s regional context. Accessible from Kathmandu via the Kathmandu-Dhangadi-Attaria-Daleldhura-Khodpe-Bagthala route, followed by a 6km gravel road.
